Helens Packed Lunch
Bring a taste of James Herriot into your home this weekend! James Herriot describes in his books how Helen spoiled him with good food and the subsequent effect it had on his waistline.
He wrote in his books: “ I knew what Helens daily food parcel would contain; not just sandwiches but meat and onion pie, buttered scones and ginger cake to lead me into further indiscretions”
Now that summer has finally arrived I thought I would have a go at re-creating this packed lunch to discover what James would tuck into half way through his veterinary visits in the beautiful Dales.
Two of the items are described in ‘The Best of James Herriot’ book, the Bacon and Egg pie, and the Ginger Cake (which is called Parkin in Yorkshire). You can find them listed on this website under ‘Mrs Halls Cookbook’ with a few other recipes linked to James Herriot under the section which I have been adding during the Covid period. Please have a go yourself at these typical Yorkshire recipes. Bring a bit of James Herriot into your home wherever you are. The third item is Cheese scones which I made myself at the same time. It all made for a tasty picnic outside this weekend as summer arrives in England and we get nearer to the end of COVID restrictions. Enjoy!
