A walk with James Herriot in Thirsk
Have you ever been curious about the real places that Alf Wight (James Herriot) wrote about in his books? If so, there is the excellent book ‘James Herriot’s Yorkshire’ in which he talks about Thirsk – the place that Darrowby was mostly based on. Thirsk is where you will find the real Skeldale House (Now the marvellous ‘WORLD OF JAMES HERRIOT’). The real ‘Drovers’ Pub. The Church where he was married. The place where his children were born. The house where he wrote most of his stories – and lots more. So in the dark winter months I mapped out a walk around the town that would not only take in all of these points of interest but also give me a feel for the town as a whole. To soak up the charm that captivated Alf on that first day he arrived in Thirsk. Summer months arrived and I walked the route and enjoyed it so much I have detailed it out with a Map and a few pictures for others to enjoy too. If you get to visit (or re-visit) Thirsk then this will give you a couple of hours walking that you will remember for a long time. And if you are unable to get to Thirsk then I hope you will still read it and follow it just as if you were walking footpaths and streets with Alf himself. Enjoy!
