How to make Bilberry Pie
Another recipe in the ’Best of James Herriot’ book that I want to tackle. The problem is that Bilberrys are a bit elusive, growing only on moorland. I set out to find some this year but no luck – the few i could find were tiny due to the dry summer
My great aunt told me that she used to pick ’whortleberries’ on Exmoor and make jam and pies which I believe are the same berries. In Scotland, apparently, they call the same fruits ‘blaeberries‘, and along the Welsh border they are ‘Wimberries‘. Seems like they were often gathered from heaths and moorlands in the old days.
i will have another attempt in 2023
