How to make Havercakes
Havercakes were made from oats. They were grown in the hilly Dales especially around Melbecks on the Haverdale beck. Oats were ground at the mill which eventually became a cloth mill on the beck. Havercake and bacon was a chief food of Dales people. During times of economic stress when many emigrated to America they would take with them a sack or barrel of home make oatcake.
